Jesus Christ often expounded His teaching in the form of a parable - a brief instructive story from life. The parable with the help of familiar images reveals high spiritual truths.

In this parable, the father means God, and under the prodigal son - a penitent sinner. The prodigal son is like every man who, with his soul, moves away from God and surrenders himself to a self-willed, sinful life. By his sins he destroys his soul and loses all the gifts (life, health, strength, ability) that he received from God. When the sinner, when he is wise, brings God a sincere repentance, with humility and hope for His mercy, then the Lord, like the Father of Mercy, rejoices with the Angels with His conversion of the sinner. He forgives all his sins for him, no matter how great they are, and returns His mercies and gifts to Him, taking to His Kingdom.
