St. Pantaleon (Panteleimon) the Great Martyr and Healer († 305) was born in Nicomedia in a noble pagan family and received a pagan name Pantaleon. After the baptism, he received the name Panteleimon. St. Panteleimon is famous for healing miracles during his life and now, by power received from Lord. For Christianity - religion that was prohibited in those days saint survived through many tortures. He was subjected to the cruelest tortures, after which he was condemned to be eaten by the beasts in the circus. But wild beasts in the arena rushed to lick his feet. Thousands of spectators shouted: "Great is the God of the Christians!" Panteleimon was hastily withdrawn from arena. Emperor Maximian ordered to cut off the holy head. Currently head of the martyr stays in the Russian Panteleimon Monastery, on the Mount Athos. In the Orthodox church St. Panteleimon is honored as the patron of warriors (his pagan name Pantoleon means "lion in everything"), as well as a healer, which is associated with his second, Christian named Panteleimon - "merciful".
St. Panteleimon is commemorated on August 9/27 July.
