St. Valery lived at the end of the 3rd century in Armenia in the city of Melitina, which at that time was under the authority of the Roman Empire. Rules then Caesar Diocletian, who organized a wave of persecution of Christians, including in the territory of Armenia.
In Melitin came two imperial recruits, who were ordered to write down in the army all the men and young men who are capable of serving. Among the recruits was and Valery. As it turned out, the army was assembled in order to hold massacres against Christians. Upon learning of this, Valery and some other soldiers who also believed in Christ refused to execute the criminal order. For this, he and another 32 soldiers were arrested and tortured.
In 298, St. Valery and his comrades took a martyr's death. Their bodies were secretly buried by Christians.
