According to the canonical life, he suffered from persecution under the emperor Diocletian and, after eight days of severe torment, was beheaded in 303. One of the most famous legends about his miracles is the “Miracle of the Serpent”: once, in ancient times, a terrible snake appeared near the Lebanese mountains. The serpent had the appearance of a dragon and lived in a deep lake, where the locals went for water. From time to time, the dragon surfaced to grab a gaping young man or girl. Frightened locals asked the local ruler to protect the people from the snake. However, that king, who became famous for his great reverence for pagan deities and intolerance towards Christians, did not find anything better than to give one person every month as a sacrifice to the dragon. Soon, of all the young men and women of the city, only the daughter of the ruler, the young princess, remained alive. When a weeping girl dressed in expensive fabrics and precious stones stood on the shore of the lake, a tall and handsome warrior on a war horse suddenly appeared in front of her. It was St. George the Victorious. He asked the princess - what is she crying about? Having learned that a monstrous serpent was about to emerge from the depths of the lake, which would swallow the beautiful girl, the warrior waited for the dragon to appear. When the serpent crawled out onto land, the horse of George the Victorious stepped on the serpent, and the Saint himself pierced the monster with a spear. The dragon was wounded, George the Victorious tied the snake and brought it with the princess to the city. With the words: “Do not be afraid! If you believe in Christ, in whom I believe, then you will find your salvation! ”, George cut off the head of the snake.
Prayer to the icon of St. George helps in the treatment of diseases, in protection from evil forces; George the Victorious is considered the patron saint of warrior-defenders.
