St. Basil the Great (+ 379) is revered as a Father of the Church. He is one of the most profound scholars of Orthodoxy and the author of many works. The most famous his works are the rite liturgy which bears his name, "Conversations on the Six Days" and polemical works against the Arians.
St. Basil came from a noble and wealthy family. He received the best education in the schools of Constantinople and Athens and he "surpassed his contemporaries in all sciences". In the search for answers to spiritual questions saint lived in the monasteries of Egypt, Syria and Palestine for several years. There he took monastic vows. In the reign of Constantius (337-362) there was a false doctrine of Arius spread "not to reverence Christ as God, but as a man". He returned home and spoke out against the heresy. St. Basil considered his main task to fight against this turmoil. In 370 St. Basil became a bishop of Caesarea. On his means he began to open almshouses, hospices, hospitals, he arranged two monasteries for men and for women.
