On both sides of Christ, on the side crossbars are depicted saints of the Orthodox Church to become symbols of repentance. This st. Andrew of Crete, who wrote the Penitential Canon, readable in the first week of Lent, and st. Mary of Egypt, through the centuries incarnate unprecedented feat of repentance.
