Saint Mary Magdalene was born in Palestine within the Magdala what is near Capernaum. She received a miraculous deliverance from possession by seven demons from Christ the Redeemer and then she believed and followed Him. The Gospels say that together with the Virgin Mary she was present at the crucifixion of Christ. She watched his burial and on the third day along with other wives-bearers Mary Magdalene came to the tomb of Jesus and found it empty. According to legend she was the first one who saw the risen Lord.
Together with the Apostles Peter and Paul St. Mary Magdalene preached in Italy. She even appeared to the Emperor Tiberius telling about Christ and having presented a red egg with the words "Christ is risen!" as a symbol of a new life. From Rome St. Mary Magdalene came to the city of Ephesus where she helped the holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. There she lived until her death and there was buried.
Memory St. Mary Magdalene is celebrated twice in the third week after Easter and July 4, August 22.
