To honor and store the relics of the deceased has been accepted by Christians since ancient times, from the moment of the formation of the church. Such relics are stored in specially designated arks called cancers.

Church cancer is made from precious wood, or non-ferrous metal, and decorated with carvings of church subjects. Cancer with the relics of a saint can remain open to worship or firmly closed.
