Saint Ludmila lived more than a thousand years ago. She was the wife of Prince Bořivoj Czech First - the first Christian ruler of this country. Prince and Princess was christened at the court of the Moravian prince Svyatopolk (territory of present-day Slovakia), about 871 years. After that, the couple ruled for more than seven years.
In the Czech Republic then were turbulent times. Christianity has not spread to all corners of the country. Influential pagans were dissatisfied with faith and politics prince and his wife. After Bořivoj death in the Czech Republic began a period of turmoil and rapid change of rulers.
First, the lands owned by Prince Svyatopolk, a close ally and patron of the late prince. After his reign was the eldest son of Ludmila - First Spytihnev, who died in 915 year. Brother succeeded next in seniority scion - Vratislav, but he quickly left this world. As a result, the Czech Republic has passed the board to eight grandson of Ludmila Vyacheslav (Vaclav), whose grandmother brought up in the Christian faith. The other grandson Lyudmila Boleslav was raised by his mother named Dragomir, who adhered to pagan religion.
On the night of 15 September 16921 on the orders of the killer strangled Dragomir princess Ludmilla by her own veil, which has become its symbol after the martyrdom. One hundred years later it was declared a Saint, and her grandson was the great Christian ruler of the Czech Republic, which also ranked as the host of the Holy Martyrs (he was later killed by his brother Boleslav).
Currently, Saint Ludmila in Prague lies in the Basilica of St. George.
