St. Basil the Great is one of the most famous and influential archbishops in the history of the Orthodox Church. After himself, St. Basil left a large number of priceless theological works and liturgical texts, including a divine liturgy named after his name.
Saint Basil was born in Caesarea of Cappadocia in a noble Christian family. His ancestors experienced the difficult times of the Great Persecutions during the reign of Diocletian, and among the relatives there were many clergymen.
Vasily received the best education that could be had at that time. There, during his studies at the Academy of Athens, he met and was forever bound by ties of friendship with St. Gregory the Theologian. It is curious that at that time, their future pursuer, Julian the Apostate, who would soon become a Roman emperor, studied at this school.
After studying, Basil spent several years in different monasteries, spending his life in prayer and fasting. Later, when the schism associated with the heresy of Arius ripened in the Church, Saint Basil opposed the heretical ideas, despite the fact that even Emperor Valent supported them.
In 370, he became Metropolitan of Cappadocia. Endowed with ecclesiastical authority, he begins to struggle with heresy, which led to a conflict with the emperor. The one to reduce the influence of Metropolitan Basil, by his decree, divided Cappadocia into two separate areas, however, this did not help much. Bishops in the new province became a close friend of Basil - Gregory the Theologian and Gregory of Nyssa - his younger brother.
The saint put a lot of effort to educate Christians, and, unfortunately, very early passed away. He was not even 50 years old. Soon after his death, he was ranked among the saints.
