St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is one of the most recognizable and revered saints in the world. St. Nicholas was the archbishop of the Greek city of Mira, which was geographically located in the south of modern Turkey. At the same time, during the lifetime of St. Nicholas, this was the territory of the Roman Empire.
The future archbishop was born in a pious Christian family in the city of Patara, in the same place in Asia Minor, where he was to serve. His native uncle, Bishop Nikolai of Patar, greatly contributed to the spiritual becoming of the boy. He taught him prayer and taught spiritual truths. And then, the ministry began in the church. First - a reader, and then a priest.
When Nicholas's parents died, he gave his fortune to the needy, and he devoted himself entirely to serving. At the beginning of the 3rd century, St. Nicholas became the bishop of the city of the World. Even during his lifetime, the Archbishop became famous among people, as a defender of the offended, oppressed, innocently convicted. Also from those old days, the saint is revered as the patron saint of seamen. In the life of the Saint, one of the cases when he resurrected a seafarer, who during the storm was fatally traumatized, is described.
St. Nicholas was known not only for miracles, but also for great Christian love, especially for children. It is not surprising that the legends about him strongly influenced folk folklore, including tales of Santa Claus.
The relics of the Holy Archbishop are currently in the Italian cities of Bari and Venice.
